Stephen Paul Capwell, age 67 years, of Hillsborough Township, NJ, died peacefully at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center-Somerset, Somerville, NJ, on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
Born in Goshen, NY, November 9, 1957, son of the late Howard Eugene and Doris Blanche Zwart Capwell, Steve will forever be remembered as an easy-going, hard-working, and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.
In 1975, Steve moved to Woodbridge, NJ, where he attended DeVry Technical Institute. In 1978, life threw him a happy curveball whereby through mutual friends, he would met a young Ms. Ruth Mae Schuff. Soon after their first date, they both knew the other was different, and they would be married in 1980. Their union would bring them two sons, of whom Steve was so proud, Sean and Adam. He and Ruth would move to Hillsborough, NJ, to raise their young family and he has resided in that same home ever since.
Steve started his career as an electronic technician with RCA in Bridgewater, NJ. While working at RCA, he decided to continue his education at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey). While attending TCNJ, he worked full time and had to deal with a serious medical issue which left him with many physical difficulties. Always a fighter, he was still able to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1986, and have a very successful career where he was respected by his colleagues and others in the industry. For the past 29 years, he worked at Coherent Corporation (formally II-VI and Anadigics) in Warren, NJ, as a Principal Engineer.
In addition to spending time with family and friends, Steve was especially fond of playing with his grand-dog, Charlie. He enjoyed going to casinos, particularly the Borgata in Atlantic City, where he loved going to the Lobby Bar to listen to the piano players. He was an avid bowler, and while bowling on a fire-fighter league, his team won first place three years in a row. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes at parties and cards with friends and family where he was known to win most hands!
Steve leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Ruth Capwell; his sons, Sean Capwell and Adam Capwell; his siblings and their spouses, Bruce Capwell, Craig and Kim Capwell, Dean and Kelly Capwell, and Scott and Mary Capwell; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family; his grand-dog, Charlie; and many dear friends.
Steve will lie in repose on Sunday, April 6, 2025, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ, where family and friends will gather to reflect and celebrate his life.
