Joan “Mimi” Burd, age 75 years, of Delaware Township, NJ, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at home, surrounded by her loving and devoted family and under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born in Trenton, NJ, April 19, 1943, daughter of the lateErnest and Frances Pettman Huber, she had resided in Delaware Township for the past twelve years, having formerly lived in Ringoes and Lambertville, NJ and New Hope, PA.
Mimi, also affectionally known as, “SugarBabe,” was retired from Shop Rite of Flemington, NJ, where she was that friendly and familiar face in the Deli Department.
Small but mighty, Mimi will be remembered for her strong will, as well as her generosity. Family was Mimi’s world, and her grandsons, especially, were the light of her life. She loved children and greatly enjoyed being a big kid with them, always getting onto mischief and having constant laughs.
A nature lover, she enjoyed spending time outdoors with her dogs and admiring her flowers, plants, and gardens.
This determined woman also had a wild side and will be remembered for her, as she put it, “Hell Raising!” She earned her motorcycle endorsement at a young age and kept it her entire life. She was also known to ride dirt bikes, four-wheelers and snowmobiles. There was simply not an adventure that she wouldn’t jump right into and bring her friends along for the fun-filled ride.
Her fierce battle with cancer over the last year showed just how strong her spirit truly was, and she would want all those reading this to not think she lost the war, but rather blazed a trail on how to control one’s destiny and to seize and make the most of each day.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Cindy Guiher Tucker and George Tucker; a brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Sherry L. Guiher; a half brother, Bill Huber; and a brother-in-law, Burley “BJ” McCandless.
Survive are her son and daughter-in-law, Harry E. Burd III and his wife, Lorie; two grandsons, Kyle and Jason Burd; her former husband and friend, Harry E. Burd, Jr.; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce Huber Hunt and Gerry Hunt; her beloved dogs, Cider and Chopper; numerous nieces and nephews, a great niece, several great nephews, and extended family; and many dear friends.
It was Mimi’s wish to try and help others, and quite possibly help find a cure for cancer. Her physical remains have been to be donated for scientific study and will then be cremated.
Life celebration services will take place beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Stockton Fire Company, 9 Mill Street, Stockton, NJ 08559.
Funeral and medical school research body donation arrangements are under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
